Process Paper
When I first found out that the topic of History day was revolution, reaction, and reform I immediately thought of some sort of rebellion or war. After talking to my parents about they told me to call my grandpa who was in the Vietnam War. Before I met with him, I researched the topic and discovered the Hawks and Doves argument. I also found out that the war itself was a form of rebellion when the Vietnamese revolted against the French. The reason I chose the Hawks and Doves over the war is because the Hawks and Doves covers the war and how the U.S. felt about it.
I conducted my research in many different ways. I started off by talking to my grandpa and figuring out the reasons that the war started and how it affected us. Those two facts lead me to look for timelines and war summaries. After I found out all the information I could, I started looking for some books. I was really lucky because I work in a bookstore, so I was able to talk to the owner about it, and as it turns out, he had a book on Vietnam with information written by people who actually participated in the war. From that point on, I have just been tying up loose ends on things that I still haven’t learned.
Selecting my presentation category was a bit difficult because I have always done poster boards even when I haven’t done History Day, so I thought that it would be good to go out of my comfort zone because it is the last year for me to do History Day. I ended up deciding to do a website because it seemed very fun because it didn’t involve glue and a printer. Although I chose a website, it has been difficult creating the project because I have had to find new things to include in order to fill out the page. I got most of my topics from last years project, but I decided to add some in that I was going to use last year, but an out of space.
My topic relates to the National History Day theme under the category of reaction. The reason that it relates is because about 75% of all U.S. citizens ended up supporting the notion that all U.S. troops should leave Vietnam because of how many people were dying, and in the end the President decided to pull about 50,000 troops out of Vietnam, so it was successful even though Northern Vietnam won the war. The reason that I used reaction is because of how the U.S. citizens split into different sects because of the many different ideas about the war, so the citizens reacted to the war.
